O ANTIPHONS

The “O Antiphons” refer to seven special antiphons that are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat (the name given to Mary’s prayer found in Luke 1:46 -55) during Vespers (Evening Prayer). They are used during a special period of Advent preparation known as the Octave before Christmas, Dec. 17-23.

The "O Antiphons" were first used by the Church in the 8th and 9th centuries. They are based on various titles used for the Christ in Scripture and incorporated into antiphons. In these "O Antiphons" the Church expresses her deep longing for the coming of the Messiah. The “O” antiphons are used in the popular Advent hymn

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

December 17 - O Wisdom

Today marks the first day of the "O" antiphons

As we enter into the closing days of Advent, one can almost hear the choirs in the churches singing O, Come, O Come, Emmanuel, the song which is a welcome to the coming of Christ in our midst as we prepare to celebrate His birth. This song is composed from an old prayer form called the "O Antiphons" which are part of the Liturgy of the Hours

Wisdom cried aloud in the street, in the open square, she raises her voice...
Proverbs 1:20

The Advent hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is based on the "O Antiphons" and was written sometime during the 9th Century. The hymn begins with the last antiphon.

O come, o come, Emmanuel,

And ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here,

Until the Son of God appear.

O WISDOM, who came from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end and ordering all things mightily and sweetly: COME, and teach us the way of prudence. Amen.

O Wisdom, O holy word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care: Come and show your people the way to salvation.

O come, O Wisdom from on high,
who orders all things mightily;
to us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel.
